The ancient Greeks used vegetable-based treatments while the Romans preferred mineral baths to help heal blemishes. Many traditional methods still prove effective when it comes to fighting pimples, spots and blackheads.
Nature has a few useful weapons we can employ in the battle against pimples, spots and blackheads.
• To calm reddened, irritated skin, use the soothing properties of marshmallow. To make a healing mask, beat 1 egg white until stiff and slowly add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) marshmallow tea. Apply with a brush, let it work for 15 minutes then rinse off.
• To combat acne, make a yeast mask. Combine 4 teaspoons (20 g) of brewer’s yeast powder with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) plain yogurt and mix in 1 teaspoon (5 ml) honey. Apply the mask to your moistened face and rinse thoroughly after 20 minutes. But remember: You will need to be patient—it could take several months before you notice any results.
PREVENTING PIMPLES
• Refresh skin daily using mild cleansers.
• Thoroughly remove makeup every night and avoid products that contain oil.
• Limit your skin’s exposure to the sun, and use the appropriate sunscreen when you are out in it.
• Monitor your diet. Determine whether alcohol, nicotine, coffee, black tea or fatty food fuels your breakouts.
A facial steam bath
A weekly deep cleansing of the pores can soothe blemished skin.
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh or dried chamomile
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh peppermint
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh thyme
- 3 quarts (3L water)
Place the herbs in a large bowl and pour boiling water over them. Let steep briefly. Cover your head with a towel and carefully hold it over the bowl for 10 minutes to let the steam open up your pores.
