Rinses, poultices, hair tonics and other conditioners can make dull hair shine again.
• Make a lemon rinse by mixing 1 quart (1 boiling water with the peel of 2 lemons and steep, covered, for 20 minutes. Strain and squeeze out the peel. let cool before rinsing your hair.
• A conditioner containing essential oils may help. Mix 3 tablespoons (45 ml) cider vinegar with 2 drops each sage, juniper and lemon oils and 1 cup (200 ml) warm water. Rinse hair with it and rinse again with warm tap water.
• To rid hair of oil and make it smell wonderful, make a vanilla rinse. Mix 1/2 cup (100 ml) each white rum and beer, 2 eggs, t teaspoon (5 ml) lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) vanilla pulp (slit open a few pods and scrape them out). Massage into the hair and rinse thoroughly after 10 minutes.
• A tea tree oil poultice will reduce oily buildup. Mix 1/4 cup (So ml) almond oil with 3 tablespoons (45 ml) lemon juice and 10 drops tea tree oil. Comb through wet hair, leave on for 30 minutes, rinse and wash.
• Reduce oil production by applying an oil cure every 10 days. Mix 2 tablespoons (30 ml) jojoba oil and 10 drops each juniper and tea tree oils, and apply to dry, unwashed hair and scalp. Comb through, cover hair with plastic wrap and a towel, and leave on for 30 minutes. Wash hair with a mild shampoo.
• A weekly egg and beer poultice can add body to limp locks. Make it by stirring together 3 tablespoons (45 ml) beer and 1 egg. Massage into your hair, cover with plastic wrap and a towel, and leave the poultice on for 30 minutes. Then wash your hair gently with a mild shampoo.
Lusterless, dull hair
• For shiny hair, mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cider vinegar, 5 drops lavender oil, 2 cups (500 ml) warm water, and rinse washed hair with it. Don’t wash out.
• Alternatively, mix 2 cups (500 ml) each chamomile tea and orange flower water and apply while warm.
• A henna poultice will leave hair with a silky shine. Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) neutral henna, I egg yolk, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) olive oil and warm water to make a spreadable paste. Massage into washed hair and leave in for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
• For healthy scalp and shiny hair, mix 3 drops each neroli, chamomile, lavender and sage oils in the palm of your hand. Work through clean hair and leave in.
• To make a natural hair fortifier, mix together 2 cups (500 ml) warm water, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) honey, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) cider vinegar and 3 drops lemon oil. Spread through the hair after shampooing and let it dry. Don’t rinse it out.
Dry. stressed hair
• Avocados arc packed with nutritious oils. To make a deep conditioner, puree the flesh of 1 avocado and mix with 2 egg yolks and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) molasses. Knead the paste evenly into wet hair and rinse thoroughly after 30 minutes. Apply this nourishing conditioner once a week.
• Bananas also make an excellent conditioner. Mix one mashed banana with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) avocado and massage the paste into the hair and scalp. Cover hair with plastic wrap and a towel and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with plenty of warm water (outdoors, to avoid clogging drains) and wash with a mild shampoo.
• Thyme protects your hair from drying out. To make a thyme rinse, pour 1 quart (I I.) boiling water over 3 tablespoons (45 ml) fresh or dried thyme. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and cool to lukewarm. Apply after every shampoo.
Those annoying flakes are usually the result of excessively dry or oily scalp and/or inappropriate hair care products.
• To make a dandruff fighting rinse, mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) each comfrey and rosemary leaves (fresh or dried) and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried nettle leaves with 1 cup (200 ml) witch hazel and steep for 5 days. Massage into the scalp after every shampoo and don’t rinse out.
• Make an essential oil remedy by mixing 1 tablespoon (15 ml) almond oil with 2 drops each cedar, rosemary and lemon oils. Massage into the scalp. Rinse after 2 hours.
